Since 30 March 2008 the Schengen Agreement applies fully in 22 of the 27 Member States of the European Union, and all the controls at their internal borders at land, seaports and airports are removed. It is the highlight of the European project started in 1985 to create an area of freedom of movement inside Europe and it is an important further step in European integration.
